WWDC 2026: Apple Is Building a Standalone Siri App Powered by a 1.2 Trillion Parameter Gemini Model

Apple WWDC 2026 just got even more exciting — a standalone Siri app is coming.

Following last week's official announcement teasing "major AI advancements," Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reports that Apple is already testing a brand-new standalone Siri app as part of the iOS 27 and macOS 27 overhaul.

What We Now Know

  • Standalone Chatbot App: The revamped Siri (internally codenamed "Campos") will function as a full chatbot-style AI agent — supporting both voice and typed conversations
  • Deep On-Screen Awareness: It will understand context across all your apps, acting as a true systemwide AI assistant instead of just a voice command tool
  • Powered by Google Gemini: A custom 1.2-trillion-parameter Gemini model from Google, via the reported $1 billion annual deal
  • Head-to-Head Competition: Designed to finally compete directly with ChatGPT, Claude, and Google's own Gemini chatbot
  • Privacy First: Running on Apple's Private Cloud Compute infrastructure with Apple Silicon servers — user data stays encrypted on Apple hardware

The Strategy: Silicon First, Software Second

The timing makes perfect sense. Apple's massive March hardware push — the M5 chip, MacBook Air, iPad Neo, and iPhone 17e — was Phase 1: getting the silicon into customers' hands. WWDC 2026 is Phase 2: delivering the AI software layer that makes all that new hardware truly powerful.

The Campos Overhaul: What Changes

This is Apple's biggest Siri redesign in over a decade. The current Siri — a voice-first assistant that launches via "Hey Siri" — will be supplemented (and likely eventually replaced) by a full chatbot interface that lives as its own app.

  • Text + Voice: Type or speak to Siri in a conversational interface, just like ChatGPT or Claude
  • App-Wide Actions: Siri will be able to take actions across apps — booking a restaurant, editing a photo, summarizing an email chain — without leaving the conversation
  • Context Memory: Deep on-screen awareness means Siri knows what you're looking at and can reference it in conversation

The $1 Billion Question

The Google Gemini partnership is the most significant detail. Rather than building a frontier model from scratch (which would take years and billions in compute), Apple is licensing a custom 1.2-trillion-parameter Gemini model and wrapping it in Apple's privacy infrastructure.

This mirrors Apple's historical approach: let others build the raw technology (Intel chips, Samsung displays, Qualcomm modems) and then differentiate through integration, privacy, and user experience.

As one analyst put it: "This could be the AI reckoning Apple can't afford to fumble."

What This Means for the Market

June 8 is shaping up to be one of the most important dates in Apple's recent history. If the standalone Siri app delivers on the "Campos" vision, it instantly brings AI assistants to over 1 billion active Apple devices — a distribution advantage that no AI startup can match.

The competitive landscape shifts dramatically:

  • Apple (AAPL) gets a credible AI story for Wall Street
  • Google (GOOG) gets $1B/year in licensing revenue + default placement on every iPhone
  • OpenAI / Anthropic face a new competitor with unmatched distribution
